WWU Hiking & Outdoor Club Risk Acknowledgement & Hold Harmless

I hereby acknowledge that I have voluntarily chosen to participate in the activities of the above-captioned Associated Student (AS) Club (hereinafter called “activity”), which may include, but are not limited to, hiking, backpacking, camping, trail walking, outdoor recreation, nature observation, navigation, climbing or scrambling on designated or natural terrain, and other activities conducted in outdoor environments. I understand that these activities may take place on uneven, steep, rocky, muddy, slippery, or otherwise challenging terrain and may involve exposure to changing weather and environmental conditions.

I acknowledge that participation in these activities may result in minor or serious bodily injury, including but not limited to injuries to the head, neck, and back; sprains, strains, fractures, dislocations, and other injuries to bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons; concussion; cuts, scrapes, bruises; dehydration; heat-related illness; hypothermia; sun exposure; insect or animal bites; allergic reactions; and other injury or impairment to aspects of the body, general health, and well-being. I also understand that outdoor activities may involve risks associated with falls, falling rocks or branches, streams and bodies of water, natural obstacles, getting lost or separated from the group, traffic or transportation to and from activity locations, and encounters with wildlife. I understand that weather and environmental conditions may change unexpectedly and may increase the risks associated with participation.

I understand that the dangers and risks of participating in these activities may not only result in bodily injury, but also in impairment of future abilities to participate in school, earn a living, or engage in other business, social, and recreational activities. I understand the risks involved in the activity. I recognize that the activity involves risk of injury and I agree to accept any and all risks associated with it, including but not limited to property damage or loss, minor bodily injury, severe bodily injury, and death. Furthermore, I may injure or be injured by the conduct of other participants in the activity. I am voluntarily participating in the activity with knowledge of the risks involved and hereby agree to accept any and all inherent risks of bodily injury, property damage, or death.

I understand there are other risks not described above, not known to me now, or not reasonably foreseeable at this time that are associated with outdoor activities. However, I acknowledge and accept those risks as well.

I agree that I have no mental, medical, or physical conditions which could interfere with my health and safety in the activity, or else I am willing to assume—and bear the costs of—all risks which may be created, directly or indirectly, by any such condition.

I also understand that Western Washington University does not provide any health insurance to cover expenses related to bodily injury, illness, or death, nor insurance for damage or loss to personal property, nor insurance for liability arising out of my negligent acts or omissions; and I acknowledge that I am completely responsible for my own insurance or financial resources to cover these expenses.

Being fully aware of the possible consequences of my voluntary participation in the activity, I hereby acknowledge and assume responsibility for all such risks, foreseen or unforeseen, and agree to indemnify and hold harmless Western Washington University, its officers, agents, employees, and volunteers, to the extent permitted by law, from any and all responsibility or liability for any injuries or damages arising out of my participation in the activity, except that which is directly caused by the negligent acts or omissions of Western Washington University.

This agreement is valid for as long as I participate in the WWU Hiking & Outdoor Club.
